Whats wrong with Call of Duty?

I know that a lot of us gamers hate the Call of Duty franchise but I've loved the games for years. They've always been fun and exciting and, for the most part, I've always gotten drawn into the stories.

Unfortunately, I hated Call of Duty Ghosts. All of it just felt like a rushed Battlefield game. I didn't care for the characters, the story or for the gameplay. It was a major letdown.

What happened to the franchise? I feel as though the series peaked during Black Ops 1 and that it has been downhill since. Modern Warfare 3 felt as though they just wanted to finish the Modern Warfare series and they didn't really care how they accomplished that.

What do you think the future or the franchise holds? I am really curious to see what people think.

They tried to suck the teat for all it was worth. When Call of Duty first got popular, it was already on it's forth installment. It was lightning in a bottle. Nobody really knew what they had other than the fact that they had it. They tried turning the dial up to 11 on modern warfare 2 resulting in what is probably the worst of the series by far. They took every element of the game and decided it needed to be more explosive, more jazzy, more in-your-face and fucking metal than before. When someone dies the player needs to be rewarded. How about the bodies explode in FUCKING MONEY!

That didn't stop it though. People who loved the 4th bought the 2nd and were still introducing outsiders to the series. The popularity of this series balloons the value of the title to such ridiculous proportions it breaks InfinityWard like a dead twig over Activision's knee. The series survives but its wounded and it's parents are now divorced and spiteful.

Treyarch is the new step-father and wants to be called daddy with their release of Black Ops. It's not great and it's too soon for what are otherwise minor differences to be considered as anything less than worse revisions of the now colossal IP. From here the game descends into normalcy.

Whatever made Call of Duty 4 the smash hit it was is completely lost in modern additions, and who even knows for sure what it was. It's not a bad game now, but there's nothing going on in CoD that is particularly exceptional. It rode a wave of support and that wave has crashed and mellowed out.

Maybe there was nothing there the whole time, these things often take a life of their own.

The reason COD4 was such a smash hit was because it's single player was a top notch blockbuster and had an exciting story. The multiplayer added classes and being able to change attachments and perks. While other games did this before, it wasn't so seamless, especially in the console market.

IMO, one under appreciated aspect of COD is it's well designed menus. MW2 was great as well because it added a lot to multiplayer, wonderful campaign (No Russian is one of the greatest levels ever), and Spec Ops.

But recent CODs haven't added anything new. So there you go

Well to get the answer to that question OP you have to dig a bit and find out who actually made CoD games. From the beginning there were two studios making CoD games: Infinity Ward was making the Modern Warfare series and Treyarch was making "the rest"(This is what led to the common misconception that EA is making a CoD every year; in fact every modern CoD took about two years to make, there were just two studios making them simultaneously).

IW: Modern Warfare -> Modern Warfare 2 -> Modern Warfare 3 -> Ghosts Treyarch: World at War -> Black Ops -> Black Ops 2

The problem is, halfway through production of Modern Warfare 3, two IW senior producers were sacked for strange reasons, and about half of the employees resigned with them. EA finished MW3 with help from Sledgehammer games, then hired some new people and continued on like nothing happened. The result was Ghosts, which sucked balls, because the new IW team sucked balls(and I suppose they still do).

As for Treyarch, their games were always somewhat questionable in quality. World at War only really "worked" thanks to its setting(great variance in weapons, fighting as part of a larger army most of the time ;)

Black Ops had great story but the gameplay was wonky as hell, and Black Ops 2 was just trying to awkwardly tie all the loose ends.

Call of duty set a standard for most of the fps genre. They introduced a customizable class set up that was more diverse then some other series, like battlefield and halo. And they rode that hype train for 6 years. Unfortunately, partially due to this series having now I believe 9 installments, and one of the arguably best cods was 5 years ago (cod 4), the series has just deteriorated. I will admit that something call of duty finally picked up on was the customizable solders, not just the classes.

But it's a dying franchise. They innovated and that's how they got big, but it's time to move on and onto newer and better things. So many people are looking forward to destiny that I haven't really heard much about advanced warfare, the next call of duty. They kind of dug themselves into a hole because each game is so similar to each other that if they released some different style of cod that it wouldn't really be cod anymore.

I believe that MW2 was the best game in the series. It was new and exciting and fresh. Going back to it now, the campaign is still incredibly fun I have to presume it was your first COD?

It was a huge step down from COD 4, in literally every way.

Ghosts was absolutely not as bad as reviews said, and I think a lot of the popular backlash to it was tied to the those reviews.

In fact, many reviews used the phrase "best of" or "greatest hits" when describing it (to imply that while it did not revolutionize, it was the most solid CoD thus far), said the MP was the most solid it's ever been, and basically 100% of reviewers enjoyed Extinction mode.

But even still, they all complained about "more of the same" and "it just doesn't feel next-gen enough" which means literally nothing.

When MW1 came out, most hardcore gamers reviled it. Now many hardcore gamers say MW1 was amazing, and they've been getting worse as it goes on. It all really just comes down to "it's popular, so I hate it."

I always liked the Call of Duty series, and in my opinions the MW2 was the best one till date with MW and WaW following closely behind. What went wrong with the CoD was that the devs did not try to put an element of depth into the gameplay.

CoD games provide you with little or absolutely no choices, characters which are increasingly getting stereotyped as being dark and with a disturbed childhood, and a fun but non realistic gunplay. I for one heartily disliked the main villain in the BO2 ( Raul _, can't remember his name).

Games nowadays have become a medium of interactive storytelling with different layers to each character. CoD has nothing which makes it instantly memorable as compared with Skyrim, Witcher or the older Splinter Cell just to name a few. What we gamers nowadays like is to invest hours in a game, get a sense of achievement from building the character. What CoD nowadays offers is to just open your console or pc, play the game for 2 hours for some weekends and then put it aside. It will continue to be so in the future and the sales will be sky high so I don't expect much changes apart from some cosmetic ones. But I will continue playing these recycled games just for the fun of it and not think about it much.

I Love to play call of duty not because it just a game but as a story behind it. I played every series of COD but MW 2 and Black ops are my best part.

Nowadays mostly every games haves a story behind it but COD have something i don't know but which makes me feel good during play. i played each and every game having good ratings but i like to play COD most. Also when I went to arena(Gaming centre) i love to play COD mw2 multiplayer. I never get bored with this type of games and play again and again.
